Jim Baker’s Source Direct imprint saw its first release in 1995 with Fabric Of Space/Bliss (SD001). Having already produced under several aliases including collaborations with Rupert Parkes (Photek) as Sounds Of Life on Certificate 18, it was the Source Direct moniker that would establish Jim’s reputation for future-thinking production techniques, and an unique musical approach that would see him go down in D&B history as some of the most original artists in the scene.
The Source Direct Label itself had a string of seminal releases in an age where Boutique Labels were non-essential, featuring original material that grew exponentially in success. The Crane (SDR004) and Black Rose (SDR006) showed the dance floors of clubs such as Blue Note the devastating capabilities of Jim’s break construction, drum programming and rare sample digging.
Jim also signed releases to well recognised labels such as Metalheadz, Razors Edge and Good Looking (the latter boasting a 12″ that features Secret Liaisons which is widely recognised as one of the most stunning amen tracks ever made)
It was this prolific output that caught the attention of Virgin sub-label ‘Science’, who signed Source Direct for a major recording contract.
2015 saw a newly established collaboration between Source Direct (Jim Baker) and Odysee Recordings. As an immensely important part of the Odysee history, this renewed partnership with Source Direct promises an exciting next chapter to the Journey. Both Jim & Andy are busy in the lab working on forthcoming releases. Look out for some fresh new remixes of SD & Mirage tracks as well as brand new material.
